FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

PAINTS –American Journey from Cheap Joes, Holbein and Schminke

PALETTE –" my can’t live without colors"
Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Quinacradone Gold, Quinacradone Burnt Orange, Cadmium Red, Permanent Rose, Quinacradone Magenta, Viridian (strong; only for mixing),Deep Sap Green,  Ultramarine, Cobalt. Cerulean and Indanthrone Blue. The Quinacradone colors are beautifully transparent.

PAPER –Fabriano and Arches  140 Cold Press Extra White (through Cheap Joes) These papers are  very high quality and worth the price.  I only use Extra White.  I do not care for  Canson or Strathmore papers – they just don’t work as well as the better papers - spend a little more for good quality – it will make ALL the difference.

BOARD AND CLIPS – Bulldog clips or other stainless clips.  My board is a piece  of plastic corrugated board cut to size at Home Depot.  I get it the size of a 1/2 sheet of w/c paper plus 1/2" all around.  Easy to clean, lightweight, great for outdoors and lasts for years.

BRUSHES - I use mostly Kolinsky sable round brushes – can be costly.  Other good choices:  Cheap Joe’s Legend,  Black Beauty Silver Brush, Cheap Joes.  Some synthetic brushes for YUPO work and Rosemary & Co. for oil painting.

EASEL – My easel setup is through Sun-Eden.com.  Very light weight and very well made.
I have the tripod, adapter and shelf.  For table work a wonderful adjustable  easel - Creative Mark Table Easel, Jerry's Artarama.

WATER CONTAINER  – a three part plastic container that is divided into three sections.  It will hold clean water, dirty water and a sponge to absorb extra water on your brush.  The Container Store has wonderful three part containers.

SPRAY BOTTLE – You will need a small spray bottle to spritz your paints as they will dry up a little in between painting sessions.  Stores carrying travel supplies have several.  I now often keep my palette in the frig in a plastic bag if I cannot paint for a while

CART –Smart Cart - available from Amazon and some craft stores.   Holds everything and perfect for workshops and classes.

SKETCH BOOK – I love the Aquabee Sketch books – they are wonderful for sketching and for doing value studies.  They take watercolor washes as well.   The 6 x 9 is perfect. Cheap Joe Catalog.

MISC.  I like soft 3B pencils that do not mar or scratch the soft surface of watercolor paper and kneaded or my favorite a Moo eraser from Cheap Joe’s.
