FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
PAINTS –American Journey from Cheap Joes, Holbein and Schminke
PALETTE –" my can’t live without colors"
Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Quinacradone Gold,, Cadmium Red, Permanent Rose, Quinacradone Magenta, Viridian (strong; only for mixing),Deep Sap Green, Ultramarine, Cobalt. Cerulean and Indanthrone Blue. The Quinacradone colors are beautifully transparent.
PAPER –Fabriano and Arches 140 Cold Press Extra White (through Cheap Joes) These papers are very high quality and worth the price. I only use Extra White. I do not care for Canson or Strathmore papers – they just don’t work as well as the better papers - spend a little more for good quality – it will make ALL the difference.
BOARD AND CLIPS – Bulldog clips or other stainless clips. Board, mine is a piece of thick plexiglass cut to various sizes. It is lightweight and easy to clean. You can also use thin wood material cut to sizes. If you use standard size paper - for ex. 8 x 10, etc. have your plastic and board cut 1/4" larger all the way around so their is room for the paper to 'breathe' and not to all the way to the edges.
BRUSHES - Art Supply companys such as Cheap Joe’s, Jerry's Artarama sell good watercolor brushes that are reasonable and very popular with watercolorists. Also Cheap Joe's has a line called Pseudo Squirrel that is wonderful and holds lots of water and soft bristles. I like that one a lot.
EASEL – For table work a wonderful adjustable easel - Creative Mark Table Easel, Jerry's Artarama and a smaller and very easy to use holder for your backboard an Ipad or computer holder from Amazon about $15. Search Crabclaw, laptop stand holder riser computer stand.
WATER CONTAINER – a three part plastic container that is divided into three sections. It will hold clean water, dirty water and a sponge to absorb extra water on your brush. The Container Store and Amazon have wonderful three part containers.
SPRAY BOTTLE – You will need a small spray bottle to spritz your paints as they will dry up a little in between painting sessions. Stores carrying travel supplies have several. I now often keep my palette in the frig in a plastic bag if I cannot paint for a while
CART –Smart Cart on wheels available from Amazon and some craft stores. Holds everything and perfect for carrying supplies to workshops and classes. Also, Amazon has wonderful insulated shopping bags in all sizes - great for toting materials.
SKETCH BOOK – I love the Aquabee Sketch books – they are wonderful for sketching and for doing value studies. They take watercolor washes as well. The 6 x 9 is perfect.. But any sketching book will work.
MISC. I like soft 3B pencils that do not mar or scratch the soft surface of watercolor paper and soft kneaded eraser - my favorite a Moo eraser from Cheap Joe’s.
